St Annes Library has gone 'Live' today and is going very well and the customers are using the service quite readily. There have been a few positive comments about how open the library looks now. I will post some pictures when I can upload them.
hmm not sure if it hasn't made the whole library experience a LOT more impersonal. Libraries are about communities, and communities are about communication.It's now possible to go in and out of the library without speaking to anyone. Shame that. Plus I hope no staff were/are made redundant because of it.
There is no reason why it should be an impersonal experience because the staff are the same welcoming and friendly people who would be quite happy to have a conversation with their customers. The intention of introducing self service was to relieve the pressure on staff to deliver the many other services that we offer in Libraries. It is sad that you feel you cannot informally approach staff who, from my experience, are a very cheerful and upbeat team.
